How netcode really works, explained slowly

The Foundry

Eight years of smelting hype into honest words.

We started as a two-person Twitch overlay project above a Fitzroy laneway cafe. Today a small crew of five writers, one video editor and a very opinionated cat run the whole operation from a warehouse on Rose Street.

  1. 2016

    Sparks fly

Two friends launch PixelDataEngine as a weekly newsletter written after shifts at a Brunswick Street game store. First issue: 41 subscribers.

  2. 2019

    The Rose Street move

We take over a former metal workshop at 57 Rose Street, Fitzroy — hence the foundry name. The benchmarking rig lives where the lathe used to.

  3. 2021

    Video desk opens

Long-form review videos launch. Our teardown of a much-hyped live-service launch crosses 1.2 million views and gets quoted by three developers.

  4. 2024

    60,000 readers strong

The Dispatch newsletter hits 60,000 subscribers across Australia and New Zealand, still ad-light and reader-funded, still written in-house.

What We Forge

Six things we make every single week.

Everything on PixelDataEngine is made by humans who actually finish the games. Here is what lands in the smelter.

Full-Length Reviews

We finish the campaign — every side quest — before scoring. Reviews run 2,000–4,000 words with a plain-English verdict up top for the time-poor.

New review every Tuesday

Frame-by-Frame Guides

Boss patterns, hidden routes and build orders, broken down with annotated screenshots. Free to read, no paywall, no 10-page slideshows.

300+ guides in the archive

Hardware Benchmarks

Handhelds, GPUs and mechanical keyboards tested on the Rose Street bench with repeatable methodology and real thermals — not marketing charts.

Bench sessions monthly

Esports Coverage

Match reports, roster moves and the story behind Melbourne’s grassroots scene, from Sunday scrims to national qualifiers.

What the community says.

Real notes from the inbox and the comments — first name, last initial, and where they read us from.

The netcode deep dive finally made me understand why my ranked matches felt off. No other blog explains this stuff without either dumbing it down or drowning me in jargon.

I bought a handheld purely off their bench numbers and the thermals matched exactly what they reported. Genuinely the only reviews I trust before spending money.

Their boss guide got me through the final act after three weeks of being stuck. Annotated screenshots instead of a 20-minute video — bless you for that.

The Dispatch is the one newsletter I actually open every Friday. Short, sharp, no filler, and the staff picks have never let me down.

Dropped into the Rose Street office for the retro CRT feature and these folks are the real deal. That restoration write-up made me dig my old console out of the shed.

Finally a review site that finishes the game before scoring it. Their honest take on the big live-service launch saved me sixty bucks and a lot of frustration.
